Thank you for this lovely piece. The comments I've seen under the disaster coverage in NYT or WaPo are abhorrent: cruel, smug, ignorant, victim-blaming bullshit. Liberals can be so proudly nasty when projecting their fears on people they see as morally inferior, and it's a pretty bad look! This piece feels like the antidote 🌻

I really admire how you are able to write so beautifully and thoughtfully when this situation is just so, so devastating. Thank you for your words, especially when it feels so hard to give voice to these things that need to be said 💜

"Denying connection won’t protect you when pain inevitably finds you. Denying connection, refusing to see how my fate is inextricably and beautifully bound up in yours, is at the heart of what brought us to this place of near-constant peril." --> Correct and direct. Thank you for this <3.

I am from South Louisiana. I so wholeheartedly feel this; we’ve been pounded by so many catastrophic storms in the last couple of decades, it is a marvel my island is still here. Each time, we rebuild. Just like there is a magical quality to where the Appalachians meet the Smokies and the Blue Ridge, there is a gris-gris to this place, a mystical quality that simply cannot be put into words. My heart is shattered for North Carolina and Tennessee. I know this devastating loss.

Much love to Louisiana. I've found a lot of myself there, thanks to the gris-gris 💜

Man. You said it beautifully. I have family in New Orleans and I live in LA with fires and earthquakes. It was 97 yesterday. I don't know if there are many places left untouched by the climate crisis. And then where does the big money go? To weapons and bombs in another country. Terrifying how we've lost sight of what is truly important. I hope your family and friends are safe.
