Just read a Ruth Carter interview and, as always, you are spot on:
“[Stack’s] His character is very self-conscious and plans] every little detail; on his pants, the pockets are slanted, he's got the collar bar, the tie bar, the cuff links— he's got everything.”
And then "Smoke is less conscious. He doesn't have a tie, he represents the everyman, and his suit was a little more boxy, a little bigger, and a little less tailored because he's hiding all kinds of stuff; he's got two guns, he's got a knife. His look reminds me of Don Cheadle in Devil in a Blue Dress. He'll take you down in a second. I loved his blue hat, too, because it was made of denim and was meant to represent workwear.”
Had this saved to return to when I finally watched the movie because I love costume analysis. Another detail that caught my eye: Sammie’s hand-mended, patched shirts—poor enough to need it, cared for enough to have someone doing your mending so neatly.
I love that detail! And he’s wearing a hat like Stack, his cool cousin. But by the time he’s old himself, he’s wearing a hat like Smoke, the cousin who chose mortality just like Sammie would.
"'milady'-ass Redditors" hahaha
🤣 I may be a hater, but am I wrong tho
I howled 😂😂

I never paid much attention to the role costume design plays in film and TV, so this was fun to read. Also another reminder to see Sinners 😅
I really feel costume design is an underappreciated art that contributes SO much to storytelling!
This was dope and very insightful. I am a new fan of your work
Thank you so much!

I’m glad you wrote this. The entire time I was solely focused on the clothes and kept asking, BUT WHAT KIND OF SHOES ARE THEY WEARING?!?!
My guess is Smoke is in oxfords and Stack is in brogues

Perfect way to start the first Monday in May!
