When I watched Top Gun: Maverick I got sucked into the immaculate vibes and was like “why do I hate Tom again? Oh wait…” and a Google and watching Going Clear later I’m like “ah that’s right. Because of All The Nonsense”.
Justice for M:I II! Ok, it’s not a great M:I movie (they hadn’t figured out the formula yet!) but it absolutely slaps as a Hong Kong gunfu James Bond movie.
I bet I would like it a lot more if it weren’t a Mission: Impossible, tbh! But it’s got so much newly-divorced dad energy, Tom was clearly going through it with Nicole 🤣
They were definitely still married when it came out (in 2000) and he constantly referred to ‘Nic’ in the making of docs on the dvd. He also cast her old chum Thandiwe Newton, with whom he does have actual chemistry! This installment is the only one where Ethan has fuck boy energy but I like that about it. It also is a huge sliding doors moment as its overrun/stunt demands forced Dougray Scott to withdraw from X-Men, allowing one Hugh Jackman to assume the role and ascend the A-list.
Never been a Cruise fan-beginning with Risky Business; but his roles in Born on the Fourth of July (his best performance!) and in Rainman made me a grudging admirer of what he COULD do if he’d just drop that smart ass frat boy persona.
It almost works on me every time I see Tom eat popcorn in that stupid way.. then I think, wait, hold on...
“He loves his movies and he loves his popcorn! Classic Tom!”—it working on me every time
"Vivid aftermath" loooooool

He’s such a good goddamn movie star he makes it easy to forget!
Every time! It’s like Groundhog Day but for talent.

Good news for you—he dropped that persona a while ago! Sometimes he is genuinely excellent.
I have only seen the first Mission Impossible movie. But this is all so very interesting and weird.
That’s bananas to have only seen that one. They get so much better!
